Montserrat Private Day Tour — Mountain, Monastery & Beyond
Rising dramatically from the Catalan plains just 50 minutes from Barcelona, Montserrat mountain is one of the most extraordinary places in Spain. Its towering rock formations, sculpted by nature into shapes that seem almost otherworldly, ancient Benedictine monastery, and breathtaking panoramic views make it a genuinely unmissable experience — and one that rewards a private, relaxing visit far more than a crowded coach trip.
We offer three private tour options, from a focused half-day visit to a full-day experience combining Montserrat with wine, food, and the Mediterranean coast.
All tours are 100% private — just your group, your guide, and your own pace.

About Montserrat
Montserrat is not just a mountain — it’s the spiritual heart of Catalonia. The Benedictine Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, founded over a thousand years ago, is home to the famous Black Madonna (La Moreneta) — a Romanesque wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary and the patron saint of Catalonia. For Catalans, this is the most sacred site in their homeland.
Beyond the monastery, Montserrat offers dramatic hiking trails, vertiginous viewpoints, and a unique geological landscape unlike anywhere else in Europe. Whether you come for the spirituality, the scenery, or both, Montserrat leaves a lasting impression.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Montserrat from Barcelona?
Montserrat is approximately 50-60 km or 50 minutes from Barcelona by car, making it an ideal half-day or full-day destination.
Is Montserrat worth visiting from Barcelona?
Yes — it’s one of the most rewarding day trips from Barcelona, combining extraordinary natural scenery, a thousand-year-old monastery, and a deep connection to Catalan culture and history. Most visitors say it’s one of the highlights of their trip.
What is the Black Madonna of Montserrat?
La Moreneta — the Black Madonna — is a Romanesque wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary housed in the Montserrat Basilica. She is the patron saint of Catalonia and one of the most venerated religious figures in Spain. The origin of her dark colouring has been debated for centuries.
Is it possible to hear the Boys Choir at Montserrat?
The Escolania de Montserrat boy’s choir performs for around 10 minutes at midday — which is also when the monastery is at its most crowded. Honestly, we don’t recommend it: the queues and the crowds work against everything that makes Montserrat special.
That said, if it’s important to you, just let us know when booking and we’ll plan the day around it.
Can you hike at Montserrat?
Yes — Montserrat has an excellent network of hiking trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging mountain routes. On the half-day and full-day tours we can include a short scenic hike depending on your interests and fitness level.
What is the funicular and cable car at Montserrat?
Montserrat has two funicular lines — one leading up to the Sant Joan hermitage with spectacular views, and one down to the Santa Cova chapel. There is also a cable car connecting the base of the mountain to the monastery level. All are optional additions to the tour.
What is the best time to visit Montserrat?
Montserrat is busiest in the late mornings and afternoons, between 11am and 2pm when coach tours arrive. We time our visits to avoid peak crowds — arriving either early or in the late afternoon depending on the itinerary.
What is Sitges?
Sitges is a beautiful coastal town about 35 kilometres south of Barcelona, known for its elegant architecture, long sandy beaches, whitewashed old town, and vibrant cultural scene. It sits on a small headland with the sea on three sides — one of the most picturesque spots on the Catalan coast.
Can the tour be customised?
Yes — all our tours are fully private. If you’d like to adjust the itinerary, spend more time at any stop, or combine different elements, just let us know and we’ll tailor the day to suit you.
Is Montserrat good for families with children?
Absolutely. The monastery, the mountain views, the cable car and funicular are all engaging for children. The pace is relaxed and the tour can be adapted to suit families with younger visitors.
