About Andorra

Andorra is a sovereign co-principality jointly governed by the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France — a constitutional arrangement that has existed since 1278, making it one of the oldest nations in Europe. Tiny, independent, and entirely its own thing.

Andorra la Vella, the capital, sits at 1,023 metres — the highest capital city in Europe. Its medieval old quarter, the Barri Antic, has survived largely intact, with stone houses, narrow streets and small squares that feel genuinely ancient.

But the real soul of Andorra lies in its mountain villages. Auvinyà, Pal and Ordino are some of the most beautiful — quiet medieval settlements perched among the peaks, with Romanesque churches and an atmosphere completely removed from modern life. These are places most visitors to Andorra never see.

The Pyrenees scenery throughout the day is extraordinary — jagged peaks, green valleys, mountain rivers, and traditional villages on both sides of the border.

What You’ll See

The Drive from Barcelona

The journey to Andorra is an experience in itself — one of the most scenically diverse drives in Catalonia. Leaving Barcelona, you pass through the Catalan interior with its striking rock formations — including a distant view of Montserrat’s unmistakable silhouette — before the landscape rises through the pre-Pyrenees and into the high mountains. Medieval towns, river gorges, and alpine valleys follow one after another. We make stops along the way — a Catalan village, a viewpoint, or a mountain café for coffee — before a scenic stop at one of Andorra’s most breathtaking viewpoints.

Andorra la Vella

Europe’s highest capital is a fascinating mix of ancient and modern. We’ll explore the Barri Antic — the medieval old quarter — and your guide will explain the unique political and cultural history of this extraordinary country. There’s also the opportunity for duty-free shopping if you’re interested.

Medieval Villages: Auvinyà & Pal or Ordino

The highlight of the day for many visitors. These mountain villages give you a completely different perspective on Andorra — away from the capital’s bustle, into a landscape of stone churches, ancient streets, and mountain silence. The Romanesque churches here date back to the 11th and 12th centuries and are among the finest examples of pre-Gothic mountain architecture in the Pyrenees.

Traditional Andorran Lunch

We stop for lunch at a local family-run restaurant — hearty mountain cuisine with strong Catalan and French influences. Typical dishes include trinxat (potato, cabbage, and bacon), escudella (a rich mountain stew), arròs de muntanya (mountain rice with meat and wild mushrooms), grilled meats over charcoal, local cured meats, and excellent Pyrenean cheeses. A proper mountain meal, not a tourist menu.

Winter Visits

From December to March, Andorra is typically covered in snow — and the mountain villages become even more magical.

⚠️ Important Information

Passport required — Andorra is not an EU member state. You must carry a valid passport (not just an ID card) for the border crossing. Please ensure all members of your group have their passports with them on the day.

Winter clothing — Mountain weather can be cold and unpredictable, especially from October to April. We recommend warm, layered clothing and waterproof footwear.

Optional: Three Countries in One Day

Geographically, Andorra sits right on the border with France, which makes it possible to briefly cross over and visit three countries in a single day. We can arrange this on request — but honestly, we don’t particularly recommend it. The detour adds significant driving time to an already long day, and with 12 hours on the road as it is, the extra kilometres mean noticeably less time actually exploring. You’re better off spending that time in Andorra’s mountain villages than in a car heading to France and back.

If you’re set on the three-country experience, we’re happy to make it work. Available for groups of up to 6 people. Extra cost applies — ask for details when booking.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Andorra from Barcelona?

Andorra is approximately 200 kilometres from Barcelona — around 2.5–3 hours by car depending on traffic and border crossing times. The drive through the Pyrenees is scenic throughout.

Do I need a visa or passport to visit Andorra?

Andorra is not an EU or Schengen member state, but it is surrounded by Schengen countries. To visit Andorra and return to Spain afterwards, you need a valid passport and — if you require a Schengen visa to enter Spain — a multiple-entry Schengen visa, as crossing into Andorra and back counts as leaving and re-entering the Schengen area. EU and EEA citizens need only their passport or national ID card.

What is Andorran food like?

Andorran cuisine is hearty mountain food with strong Catalan and French influences. Typical dishes include trinxat (potato, cabbage, and bacon), escudella (a rich mountain stew), arròs de muntanya (mountain rice with meat and wild mushrooms), grilled meats over charcoal, local cured meats, and excellent Pyrenean cheeses. Portions are generous and the food is genuinely good. Vegetarian options are available on request — just let us know when booking and we’ll choose a restaurant accordingly.

What is the best time of year to visit Andorra?

Andorra is worth visiting year-round. Summer (June–September) offers green mountain scenery, hiking, and warm weather. Winter (December–March) brings snow, a magical atmosphere in the villages, and access to excellent ski resorts. Spring and autumn are quieter and offer dramatic light and landscapes.

What are Auvinyà and Pal?

Two of Andorra’s most beautiful and authentic medieval mountain villages. Auvinyà is a tiny hamlet of stone houses with a stunning 12th-century Romanesque church. Pal is slightly larger, with well-preserved medieval architecture and extraordinary mountain views. Both are far off the typical tourist trail and give a very different impression of Andorra from the capital.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes — the mountain scenery, snow (in winter), medieval villages, and Romanesque churches are all engaging for children. The pace is relaxed and the itinerary can be adapted for families.
